Two people were sitting in a chariot, in the centre of a major battleground in north-central India just a few millennia ago. The yoga guru Arjunawas the one among the two who knew that it wouldn't take long before conflicts broke out. He demanded Krishna (Master of Yoga) what he ought to think about and how he would consider the moment. He also demanded Krishna, the Master of Yoga (Yogeshwara) to tell him what would be the best thing to do.

It was impossible to find empty words. Krishna explained to Arjuna ways to have a fully-fledged life that is self-knowledgeful and self mastery in a short discourse.

It was a ferocious battle and everyone lost. Vyasa's epic poem, The Mahabharata (The Great Indian War) was composed by Vyasa. The poet turned Krishna's inspiring teachings a precious jewel. They were immediately extracted and were renamed Bhagavad Gita ("The Song of God") which was was widely circulated throughout the subcontinent.

This was many thousand years ago. Today the Gita is present in nearly every Indian household and has been translated into every major language across the globe. Literally billions upon millions of copies have been printed and written. A few years back an South African spiritual organization printed one million copies and distributed them for free. Rudyard Kipling was made a Freemason of Lahore when four of his scriptures were set at the altar.

Why is the Gita so appealing? It's practical, and free from any vague or abstract thought. My first visit to India was more than 40 years back. I was introduced to an yogi living in a small houseboat along the GangesRiver in Benares (Varanasi). He didn't speak or write, but people would come to him for help for years. What did he do? He carried an exact copy of the Bhagavad Gita. Upon being asked the question or problem, he would open it and point to the appropriate section, presenting the questioner with an entire and flawless solution.

My spiritual awakening started by getting me out of my familiar religion and into a new world filled with realities I didn't know how manage. I struggled in the new world until finally I purchased a book in paperback of the Bhagavadgita. I didn't go through it. I took it in. I wasn't listening to words from a long-dead teacher, my Self was talking to me through the pages of this little book. I didn't learn anything else from Gita-I, beyond what I already knew. The eternal Self spoke the truth forever. My life was changed through the Bhagavad Gita, which brought me a life that never ends.

There has never been an issue throughout my lifetime that the Gita did not make clear or enabled me to address or even comprehend. It's not in any way dogmatic. Krishna said to Arjuna at the end "Now, I have taught you the wisdomwhich is secret of secrets." It is worthwhile to consider it. "Then, act as you think is best." There aren't any threats or promises or coercion. The reader has the final say of the outcome.

The Bhagavad Gita is a reminder that we can develop a consciousness beyond what it teaches. It provides us with the means. It is a good idea to study the Gita each day for the rest of your life.
